CYCLE IN CUBA - SANTIAGO INTINERARY

Friday Departures - December 2004 through April 2005




Day 1: ARRIVAL AND RELAXATION
Arrive and spend the first day at the fully serviced 5 stars Hotel Melia Santiago. An information session about your next week in Cuba will be held. Dinner at hotel Melia Santiago depending upon arrival time in Santiago de Cuba. (D)



Day 2: SANTIAGO DE CUBA - 30km
Explore the downtown excitement of Cuba’s second largest city. Scheduled stops include the Plaza de la Revolucion, the famous Town Hall where Fidel Castro gave his first victory speech, the bustling town centre, the Parque Cespedes, the Padre Pico Steps and the neighborhood of Vista Alegre including San Juan Hill made historically significant by Theodore Roosevelt during the Spanish – Cuban – American War. Lunch in a Cuban restaurant with dinner at Hotel Melia Santiago. After dinner visit the Casa de los Tradiciones, a Cuban club with authentic music. (B,L,D)



Day 3: EL MORRO CASTLE
Cycle out of the city to El Morro Castle located at the entrance to the Bay of Santiago. The Castle was designed by Italian architect Antonelli and built in the 17th Century as protection against pirates. The ride home follows the exquisite coastline of the Bay. Lunch in a Cuban restaurant then on to the Moncada Quartel, a pinnacle landmark in the Cuban Revolution. Dinner at the hotel. (B,L,D)



Day 4: THE BASILICA OF EL COBRE
A pleasant bike ride through the countryside leads to the Basilica of El Cobre. The church was erected in honour of the country’s patron saint, Our Lady of Charity and is an important pilgrimage site for Cubans. Lunch enroute. Afternoon return to Hotel Melia Santiago for a swim. Diner at the hotel then visit El Patio de los Abuelos for the evenings entertainment. (B,L,D)



Day 5: WESTERN BEACHES
The day is spent on one of the many lovely beaches to the west of Santiago de Cuba so don’t forget to pack your water shoes and suntan lotion. A Creole style lunch is provided in this beautiful location. Return to the hotel for dinner. (B,L,D)



Day 6: THE CENTRAL VALLEY
After a day at the beach, this day is spent visiting the rural countryside, cane fields and ascending to Puerto Boniato for a spectacular view of the city. Lunch at the Puerto Boniato restaurant and an afternoon return to the hotel. Dinner at the hotel. (B,L,D)



Day 7: LA GRAN PIEDRA AND SIBONEY BEACH
We cycle to Siboney Beach then by vehicle up to La Gran Piedra; a large granite outcropping from which some claim on a clear day you may see Haiti and Jamaica. It’s back to Siboney Beach for lunch at a fisherman’s house and for the final day of cycling. A farewell dinner is planned for the group tonight at a rooftop restaurant. (B,L,D)



Day 8: DEPARTURE

Further cycling may be possible today depending on your time of departure. (B)

  • Your Fitness: Most moderate to active people should enjoy this holiday. (30 to 90km per day with hills.)
  • Hotel: Hotel Melia Santiago, 5-star.
  • Escorts: A bilingual guide will accompany you during all cycling activities.
  • Meals: Breakfast and dinner are provided at the hotel or as per intinerary, lunch is provided at site-specific location. Snacks and alcohol not included. (B,L,D)
  • Other: Evenings entertainment as per intinerary. Other evenings are left open for your own excusions. Vehicle support as required. Bicycle rental included.
