ECO TOURS >> GARDENS OF EASTERN CUBA

Cuba Beyond the Beaches brings you an exciting tour of four of Eastern Cuba's most interesting botanical gardens. Here on the coastal strip and in the forbidding Sierra Maestras are microclimates which support exotic species and ancient plants. From desert to cloud forest to specialty and species gardens; you will be thrilled by these collections.

Our lecturers are internationally recognized Cuban experts whose lifework has been their gardens and the search, protection and propagation of the indigenous species of Cuba.

Our two week package includes some time to relax at the beach and to explore another part of the island before or after your garden tours. Our one week package is seven days of exciting gardens, forests, and hillsides.

Combine your tour with a trip to one of Cuba's old growth forests and go wild orchid hunting with our fern and orchid expert. Hike one of Cuba's remote parks and enjoy discovering the varied eco-systems which exist side by side.

Master Gardener Don Nicholson will be leading some of our large group tours. Individuals and small group tours are welcome; we tailor your tours to your interests and all are accompanied by the lecturer, and translator if required.

Your tour starts and finishes in Santiago de Cuba, a colonial city built on many hills overlooking a bay which has been a safe habour for Henry Morgan and Teddy Roosevelt, Spanish galleons and privateers, war fleets and slave ships, oil tankers and luxury yachts.

For those of you coming for two weeks, your beach stay is at a small all-inclusive resort, about 75 kms from Santiago. Here you will find peace and tranquility in an idyllic setting. Perched above a small town, with breathtaking seascapes from every room, this is an ideal place to start enjoying the warmth and friendliness of Cuba, and to relax after a busy week of gardens. A limited number of rooms are available in a homestay at a beach nearer Santiago - please ask us about this option.

The mountain resort is a true eco-resort high in the Sierras about 100 kms of winding roads from Santiago. Waterfalls and pools enhance a valley of tropically lush vegetation, while alpine-type meadows and small farms make the mountain slopes above a wonderful contrast.

Accommodations are quoted as Homestays in Santiago de Cuba and Baracoa. All are in carefully selected and licensed Cuban homes. Most accommodations offer private baths, air-conditioning and fans. Your hosts may speak a little English but gestures, smiles and genuine kindness make the stay a truly memorable experience. Our bilingual staff is always available.

Alternative accommodations are available in hostals (converted colonial or republic era buildings which are now tiny hotels complete with restaurants and bars), or in a variety of hotel accommodations.

Air-conditioned transportation accompanies all tours. Please let us know if standing or longer walks are difficult for you - we will try to make all tours accessible. Some of the gardens are partially wheelchair accessible, we provide well-trained assistance for people in wheelchairs or those with limited mobility.

Most meals are included. The beach resort is all-inclusive with an a la carte menu or buffets. The eco-resort offers a limited menu or buffets. Our lunches and special dinners on tour are in some of the area's most interesting dining spots, with menus carefully selected for you. People with special dietary requirements are recommended to select our homestay package and to advise us when booking.

This tour is available with hotel accommodation for all nights. Please contact us.
