DREAMCATCHER WORKSHOPS >> PAPIER MACHE

Papier Mache Workshop
Rolando, Craftsperson & Architect, Cuba

Dreamcatcher Workshops bring you to the heart of Eastern Cuba for a five day papier mache workshop.

Based in the heart of the vibrant city of Santiago de Cuba where Colonial and African cultures mix and mingle in a unique rhythm, you will absorb the religion, culture and point of view which informs all Cuban art. Your day will begin with a tour or cultural event and continue with a step by step workshop from which you will produce your own unique pieces.

Your workshop leader, Rolando, is a recognized craftsperson and architect. Bringing the two disciplines together informs the structural appearance of his work which is a unique interpretation of religious and cultural themes through the medium of papier mache and found and created objects. His work is sought after by collectors around the world.

Deluxe accommodations, or homestays, transportation, guides, tour director and an all inclusive package* ensure a stress-free learning experience.

Day 1

You will be met at Antonio Maceo airport by our friendly staff and taken directly to your hotel or homestay. Your home for the workshop is a 5 Star international hotel with relaxing pools and nightly entertainment.

Day 2

We will start early to leave the city. Climbing the Grand Piedra we will pass from the dry coastal farm land, through coffee, orange and mango groves, into a cloud forest alive with birds and butterflies, where fern trees shelter tiny lilies and orchids hang in profusion from the trees.

Our lunch time spot at a relaxing beach hotel will give you the opportunity to collect more materials for your project. After lunch Rolando will start your workshop with an introduction to the methods you will be using and a general discussion of papier mache methods and piece production.

Day 3

Our morning tour will take us to a temple site for Santeria the African Cuban religion practiced throughout the island. You will have an opportunity to explore the interpretations of this religion which informs much of Cuban art and music.

After lunch you will start work on your molds, there will be a further explication of other techniques, decorations and the use of found objects from forest and sea.

Evening visit from artists and craftspeople.

Day 4

A morning tour to an internationally recognized fern collection. The director of this important and beautiful garden and laboratory is also a recognized artist, using ferns from the garden to express the connection of nature and art.

In the afternoon - time to remove your molds and continue the development and finishing of your object.

Free evening - optional visit to the Trova.

Day 5

Our morning visit will take us to El Cobre to visit the Basilica of the Virgen of the Caridad the patron saint of Cuba. While there we will take the opportunity to visit a monument to runaway slaves, created for UNESCO by one of Cuba's leading sculptors.

After lunch time to return to finishing and decoration of your piece.

Optional visit to Tropicana Night Club.

Day 6

Our morning visits will take us to galleries and workshops to see the work of Santiago's artists and artisans.

After lunch you will have time to finish and varnish your pieces.

Day 7

Free morning After lunch an exhibition of your work - your workshop leader will add his own work. We will celebrate the end of the workshop with a dinner and entertainment and some salsa.

Day 8
